Opportunities in Educational Placement

As you have moved through this course, you have read a great deal about the joys and hardships of gifted kids. Hopefully, you have been able to establish some “absolutes” that you believe about serving and guiding the gifted kids you teach. We know that, in general terms, gifted students have the ability to learn more quickly, and get bored more quickly. They can ‘tune in’ to people’s moods, as well as their own, more intensely, and likewise can tune out with equal intensity. Please take a moment right now to reflect. What have you learned about giftedness? How does it match up to what you see in the gifted students you serve? And, if you have gifted students in the regular education setting, do you feel their needs are being met? (These are food for thought questions, and require no written answer!) If you answered, “No,” to the last question, then perhaps this week’s topic, Acceleration, might be an option.
