Welcome to the Guidance and Counseling for the Gifted course! In this course, you will learn about different aspects of giftedness and look at ways to help gifted children soar with success. The visual theme for this course is one of and soaring/flying through the clouds and navigating through life. We hope this serves as a visual reminder that the “sky is the limit” for your gifted students, as long as you provide them with the instruction and guidance they need!
If you have taken any of the other 4 gifted courses, you will be aware of some repetition of concepts and ideas. This is because all of these factors work together to build the whole picture of giftedness. It is difficult to draw absolute boundaries between the different aspects of working with gifted children, and so you may see some familiar material. You are strongly encouraged to review these concepts and continue to consider their ramifications for you as a gifted teacher and for your students. The more deeply you understand the concepts of giftedness, the more effectively you will be able to work with all children.
Workload and Navigation
The following are a list of “need to know” information for you regarding this course. Please contact your instructor if you have any questions or concerns once you have reviewed this list.
- There is considerable reading in this course. Having said that, many of the articles you will read will be between 3 – 8 pages in length, and so while the assigned reading may look tremendous, you will find the articles are fairly small.
- In the Matrix for each week, you will see the reading that is required, and then a larger list of titles you may or may not want to review. Those readings (listed in the far right-hand column) are optional.
- To navigate within each week, you can click on the Next at the bottom of the page to go forward, or on Previous to go back. You can also use the drop-down menu at the top of the page (listed as “Week 1,” “Week 2,” and so on) to navigate to the page of your choice.
- You will have 3 self-assessments. These are ungraded, although you will see your percentage correct. These are for your own review.
- You MUST take the pre- and post-test for the course. In order to get credit for the course, you must make an 80% or better on the post-test. The pre-test is only used to gauge your learning during the course.
- You will notice that you have a heavier work-load in the middle of the course, tapering off as you reach the end. Weeks 2, 3, and 4 will most likely be the heaviest workload. Please plan your time accordingly.
- You will have options for several assignments in terms of products you create to demonstrate what you know. Please choose the option with which you feel most comfortable! You are encouraged to explore the Web2.0 tools available and free for use in this class and in your own classes, as well.
