Susan Winebrenner, author of Teaching Gifted Kids in the Regular Classroom, uses an Extensions Menu to expand a topic of study and provide the opportunity for independent investigation. If you look at her example of the American Wars Extensions Menu, you will notice that the choices offered are based on the multiple intelligences. Not only does she provide eight possible choices, but she also leaves a space open for the student to come up with an original choice. Depending on your students, you may leave it up to the student to surprise you, or you may have the student discuss his/her proposal with you first.
