Once eligibility has been determined at an initial staffing, an Educational Plan (EP) will be developed for the student. Based on recent state and district test scores, parent and teacher input, the Renzulli Rating Scale (a checklist that addresses gifted characteristics), and any other pertinent data collected on the student, the committee members in attendance at the staffing work together to develop an EP for the student, based on curricular strengths.
The State of Florida has set the parameters for developing an EP but has not yet developed a standardized form. All sixty-seven districts in the state are encouraged to develop their own forms based on the state requirements. Rule 6A-6.030191 titled Development of Educational Plans for Exceptional Students Who Are Gifted establishes the guidelines from who attends the meeting, to how often the EP is revised and implemented. “An EP must be in effect before specially designed instruction is provided to an eligible student and is implemented as soon as possible following the EP meeting.”
